Parliament passes Mining and Minerals Bill

KAMPALA – During a lengthy plenary sitting that stretched into the night on Thursday, Parliament passed the Mining and Minerals Bill.
The Bill seeks to organize, register, license, regulate and transform artisanal and small-scale mining in Uganda.
The new law introduces a progressive artisanal and small-scale mining licensing scheme for empowering area communities where minerals exist.
Gold, one of the minerals mined in Uganda, is currently the country’s leading foreign exchange earner among all exports, fetching an average of $180m (Sh648b) per month.
